We were very excited this morning to be the first team to have a hard hat tour of the University Arms, Cambridge. The opening is now set to be late Spring 2018; BUT it will be well worth the wait. It was so nice to see the iconic building transforming into what will be an amazing hotel. It will be a four-star deluxe hotel, run as an independent property, but part of the Marriott Autograph Brand.
The hotel will have 192 bedrooms ranging from Cozy Doubles to Junior Suites. All rooms have marble bathrooms, rainfall showers and double beds. There will be a gym open to residents only and valet parking on a first come first served basis (30-40 spaces). The food, beverage and conference outlets will be looked after by Chef Director Tristan Welch. The Library, with the original real fire place will be open for residents and non-residents to relax, drink and eat. The Bar will be stocked with locally made beers. The brasserie style restaurant will be open from 6am for breakfast until late. The Ballroom will be the hotels only function space and will be able to seat up to 200 for dinner. It splits into two with one section being slightly larger than the other (they will not be able to confirm exact capacity until they have been able to try it out!). The Ballroom and all the food and beverage outlets will be accessed via their own entrance and all look over Parkers Piece.
The style of the hotel really is “quintessentially” English…it reminded us of the Savoy in London. Many of the hotels originally features have been restored, maintained or recreated. All rooms have natural daylight. The décor is very reminiscent of the Edwardian era, with antique style furniture. The building work is so very nearly complete, when we were there the copper smith was putting the finishing touches to the portico. From January they will be moving in all the fixtures and fittings and recruiting and training staff. They are leaving nothing to chance and will not open until all staff are trained and ready to deliver the “5 star service” they are aiming for! We were very impressed and cannot wait for them to be open.
